While studying marketing during my MBA, I had learnt about the four Ps of marketing – product, price, place, and promotion. This is a concept which talks about the 4 basic pillars of marketing strategy. Later when I was doing a summer internship with a leading consumer durable brand in Pune, I learnt about the fifth P of marketing – PASSION. From then on, I had caught myself often wondering how can passion play a role in marketing strategy. Took me a while, but I did realise that if you are passionate about your work, be it any profession, you are going to make a name for yourself in that particular field.

After my MBA, I started working in the corporate sector as a management trainee in one of the finest engine manufacturing companies in India. After spending a year in the engineering field, I made a switch to the banking sector and spent more than a decade in retail liabilities handling multiple branches and teams.

It was in the year 2015, when I started feeling the dissatisfaction. Even though I was climbing up the corporate ladder steadily in terms of salary and grade, I was not growing as a person. I was not enjoying my job. Passion was missing. There is a saying, “Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life.”

Leap Of Faith

If you love your work, if you enjoy it, you are already a success. I wanted to do something where my passion could become my profession. After some contemplation and a lot of discussions, I took the dreaded step. I made my mind to quit the corporate world. I put my plan into action and did what I had to do first – I put down my papers in April 2015 and said goodbye to my decade-long career in banking.

Now what?

What was I going to do for the rest of my life?

What would I do for a living?

These questions stood in front of me, and I had to answer them before my notice period ended. While growing up, I saw my grandfather, my father, and my uncle farming on our ancestral land in Vidisha, Madhya Pradesh. Never had I planned a career in farming & agriculture, yet it seemed the most attractive to me at that moment.

My mind made, I disclosed my plan to my family and received immediate support to the idea. To be honest, it came as a surprise since I was talking about getting into a profession I had no education or training in.

I know I say this from a place of great fortune and privilege, but until we decide to follow our hearts we would never know how far we can go. My biggest strength has been my family’s support and faith in me.

I found my purpose in life at the age of 34. It’s never late to find your purpose. It might take a while, but it does happen. Allow your passion to become your purpose, and it will become your profession.
